When

The school starts in the morning of Monday Sept. 1 and ends in the afternoon of Friday Sept. 12.  You should plan to arrive on Sunday Aug. 31 and leave the campus on Saturday Sept. 13.

Where

The school will be held at the Arcavacata campus of the University of Calabria, near the city of Cosenza.  The campus address is Via P. Bucci, 87036 Arcavacata di Rende (Cosenza).  Lodging will be available at the Residenza Socrates of the campus between Aug. 31-Sept. 13.

How to get there

By airplane:  The closest airport to the school is Lamezia Terme (code: SUF).  Once you reach the airport, take one of the Autolinee Romano buses that go from the Lamezia airport to a bus terminal (autostazione) in the city of Cosenza.  The same company has buses that go to Catanzaro; make sure you take the Cosenza bus.  The bus schedule is below:

On Sunday Aug. 31 we will meet the buses that arrive at the Cosenza bus terminal at 11:50 and 19:45, and will provide transportation to the Socrates residence.  We will also have a minibus at the Lamezia Terme airport at 15:00, meeting arriving students at the airport exit gate.

By train:  The closest train station is in the town of Castiglione Cosentino (3.5 km from the Arcavacata campus).  For train schedules, see the Trenitalia (italian railways) website.  Once you arrive at the Castiglione Cosentino station, take via Edison (about 100 m) and cross via Leonardo Da Vinci; a bus shelter marks the stop of the Consorzio Autolinee bus that goes to the Arcavacata campus.  Bus tickets can be bought at the Time Out bar.  On Sunday Aug. 31 we will meet participants arriving at the  Castiglione Cosentino station at 19:00, and will provide transportation to the Socrates residence.

After you get there

Summer school schedule

Field trips:  Transportation during the field trips will be by bus to and from the campus of the University of Calabria.  Reaching the outcrops will require some hiking.  You will need comfortable footwear and rain gear.  Long pants are recommended because of prickly bushes.
